Hamburg-born Nmecha, who represented England at youth level before switching his allegiance to Germany in 2019, made just two first-team appearances for City.
Nmecha said: ‘I’m looking forward to seeing many familiar faces again and, above all, to finally show what I’m capable of.Â
‘I was struck then as I am now with the path they’ve set out on here and have always followed VfL since I left. I want to do my bit to ensure the team continue to be successful and that we achieve our goals.’

VfL sporting director Marcel Schäfer is delighted Nmecha has returned to VfL.Â
‘We were always convinced of Lukas’ qualities and continued to follow his path closely after his departure from Wolfsburg,’ he said.Â
‘He’s taken the next step in his career at Anderlecht and improved emormously. He also showed with Germany’s Under-21 side how important he can be for a team on and off the pitch, taking on leadership tasks and leading by example despite being just 22 years old. We’re really pleased that in Lukas, one of the most promising German attackers is now with VfL on a permanent basis.’Â Â
